I’ve Never Told Anyone About This Act of Kindness Before
A recent story by Mukundarajan V N has encouraged me to break my silence
If we do something from a place of kindness and then tell others about it, are our motives purely altruistic? Or is our behaviour motivated by the desire for back pats and kudos?
A cynical person would say kind acts, which are then publicised are disingenuous and come from a desire for personal gain as opposed to a pure and unadulterated intention to bring good into the world.
I beg to differ.
Over the next few months, a pizza shop in Edinburgh is offering free pizzas to everyone in the city as an act of kindness. Marc Wilkinson, who is the owner of Pure Pizza, says he wants to help residents of the city as a response to the crippling cost of living and spread a bit of kindness.
This act of kindness was reported on the BBC.
Some may argue it is a PR stunt disguised as kindness. But do we really need to critique the potential motives behind Marc Wilkinson’s offer? Why look a gift horse in the mouth? And if this kind act does result in more custom and fame for his business, surely this is a positive thing. Can we really begrudge him a personal gain for spreading kindness?
