I was with a guy for 5 years. My body screamed at me that it was wrong. Like you, on paper we looked good. I’d say he thought I would change my mind about having kids. His mother begged me and was a twat. He thought it was between me and his mum. Needless to say - we didn’t last.

Your ex’s family set up sounds horrible. The way his mum spoke to you and of you is ghastly and I know how oppressive and horrible that feels.
